The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin

The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin

This book helped me find my way back to my creative roots. It seems as though life has slowly chipped away at my belief that I'm a creative being. The Creative Act reminded me that creativity is a way of being, and that I can choose to live my life creatively.

The Power of Meaning: Finding Fulfillment in a World Obsessed with Happiness by Emily Esfahani Smith

The Power of Meaning: Finding Fulfillment in a World Obsessed with Happiness by Emily Esfahani Smith

A quick read that helped me reframe my thinking around happiness, fulfillment, and creating a life of meaning. Smith argues that the pursuit of happiness is a trap, and that we should instead focus on finding meaning in our lives. Obviously, a very strong driver of this very podcast.

Riverside.fm

Riverside.fm

I use Riverside for podcast recording and editing. While it certainly isn't perfect, it has made my recording, editing, reel creation, and publishing workflow tremendously faster than more robust tools like Logic Pro.

Shure MV7+

Shure MV7+

This is an amazing microphone. Shure is a well-known, highly regarded brand in the audio world. The MV7+ is a dynamic microphone (best for podcasting) and has both USB-C and XLR outputs. When I record an announcement, or solo show, I want a simple USB-C to USB-C connection from mic to mac. This is straightforward and effective. However, when I record a guest, in person interview, I need 2 (or more) mics, and need an audio interface, so I need the XLR output. The MV7+ is a great first mic. If you're new to podcasting and don't know if you will record solo, with guests, remote, or in-person, you can't go wrong with this as your first microphone purchase. It kicks ass at any podcasting method.

Shure SM7dB

Shure SM7dB

If you're looking to optimize your podcast's audio and capture the crispest and most professional sound possible, this is the mic for you. The SM7dB is pretty much top of the line . I genuinely cannot think of a podcast I listen to / watch that doesn't use the SM7dB. Many of the most popular podcasts in the world utilize this mic: Diary of a CEO, Modern Wisdon, Huberman Lab, Mel Robbins, Joe Rogan, and so many more. The tradeoff...well it's a relatively high cost investment ($549 new), but you can snag one of marketplace too for half.
